Founded as the American Religion Data Archive in 1997 and going online in 1998, the initial archive was targeted at researchers interested in American religion. The targeted audience and the data collection have both greatly expanded since 1998, now including American and international collections submitted by the foremost religion scholars and research centers in the world. The ARDA is generously supported by the Lilly Endowment, the John Templeton Foundation, Chapman University, Pennsylvania State University and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
ATLA Missions and Missionaries Around the World, 1611-1922
The Missions and Missionaries Around the World, 1611-1922 collection contains over 2,000 titles that tell the stories of various Christian missions and missionaries throughout the world, focusing on the 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection features both foreign missions to over 50 countries and domestic, or "home missions," within North America and Europe. The 19th century ushered in a more global awareness of different cultures and peoples and the Christian missionary response was to reach out to those cultures and peoples. Foreign countries in this outreach include efforts to India, China, Africa, Korea, and Japan, as well as more remote destinations such as Guyana, Tahiti, and the Marquesas Islands. Domestic "home" missions include missions to Native Americans as well as outreach within the UK and Germany. Prominent missionary organizations include American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and the China Inland Mission. Prominent authors include Morris Officer, Robert E. Speer, Adrien Launay, and St. Francis Xavier. Many Christian traditions are featured in the collection, including the Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church in the USA, Lutheran Church, Orthodox Church.
China Historical Christian Database (CHCD)
The China Historical Christian Database (CHCD) quantifies and visualizes the place of Christianity in modern China (1550-1950). It provides users the tools to discover where every Christian church, school, hospital, orphanage, publishing house, and the like were located in China, and it documents who worked inside those buildings, both foreign and Chinese. Collectively, this information creates spatial maps and generates relational networks that reveal where, when, and how Western ideas, technologies, and practices entered China. Simultaneously, it uncovers how and through whom Chinese ideas, technologies, and practices were conveyed to the West.
This project breaks new ground in providing quantifiable data about modern Sino-Western relations. Its intuitive interface generates visualizations, lists, and maps for use by the general public, students and teachers in secondary education and colleges, in the US and globally, with English and Chinese navigation. Advanced DH users have open access to its data for elaboration. BU’s digital infrastructure guarantees long-term sustainability, and CHCD’s international collaborations in the USA, Asia, and Europe help promote historical understanding between China and the rest of the world.
The CHCD is hosted by the Center for Global Christianity and Mission at Boston University.
Oxford Handbook of Ecclesiology
This Handbook is a comprehensive resource for the scholarly study of the self-understanding of the church through the centuries—its theological identity. Nearly thirty expert contributions describe the continuities and discontinuities in the changing understanding of the church. The scope of ecclesiology is defined by the manifold self-understanding and action of the church in relation to a number of research fields, including its historical origins, structures of authority, doctrine, ministry and sacraments, unity and diversity, and mission, as well as its relation to the state, to civil society, and to culture. The book covers the main sources of such ecclesiological research and reflection, namely the Bible, church history from the apostolic age to the present, the wealth of the Christian theological traditions, the experience and practice of the churches today, together with the information and insights that emerge from other relevant academic disciplines. Ecclesiology has also been the main focus of the intense ecumenical engagement, study, and dialogue of the past century and is the area where the most intractable differences remain to be resolved. In particular, generous space is allocated to the New Testament sources of ecclesiology and to some of the most influential shapers of modern ecclesiology.

Oxford Handbook of Early Christian Biblical Interpretation
The Bible was the lifeblood of virtually every aspect of the life of the early churches. The essays in this Handbook explore a wide array of themes related to the reception, canonization, interpretation, uses, and legacies of the Bible in early Christianity. A first group of studies examines the material text transmitted, translated, and invested with authority, and the very conceptualization of sacred Scripture as God’s word for the Church. A second group looks at the culture and disciplines or science of interpretation in representative exegetical traditions. A third group of essays addresses the remarkably diverse literary and non-literary modes of interpretation, while a fourth group canvasses the communal background and foreground of early Christian interpretation, where the Bible was paramount in shaping normative Christian identity. A fifth group assesses the determinative role of the Bible in major developments and theological controversies in the life of the churches. A sixth group returns to interpretation proper and samples how certain abiding motifs from within scriptural revelation were treated by major Christian expositors. A seventh and final group of studies follows up by examining how early Christian exegesis was retrieved and critically evaluated in later periods of church history. The Christian Preaching, Worship, and Piety, 1559-1919 collection contains over 3,000 titles reflecting how Christians lived out their faith in the form of sermons, worship, and piety. Sermons were a primary tool for teaching moral and spiritual lessons. The collection features over 700 texts of either individual or collected sermons from over 400 authors, including Lyman Beecher, Henry Ward Beecher, Dwight Lyman Moody, Charles Grandison Finney, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Francis Xavier Weninger.
